We Are H2O Panthers

Why should we work towards a Great Lakes Commons and how ?I teach students in a class called Great Lakes Cultures offered by American Indian Studies at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The 'panther' is our school's mascot but they also wanted to imply the Chibizhew of the Anishinaabe tradition. They have been studying the Great Lakes all semester and thinking about how much the lakes mean to them. They collectively wrote this:
"Awake in our class The Western Great Lakes, we acknowledge the lakes are 10,000 years young, humans are 75% water, water is life, our future and health depends on it and it is ultimately our responsibility to care for the lakes."
Students also decided to spell out "water" in American Sign Language (see photo).
